Short answer: ChatGPT ads and Google Ads do different jobs. Google Ads matches the keywords people type and is a mature channel with wide format and measurement options. ChatGPT ads match the context of a conversation and appear below the answer, labeled as an ad, while the user is still comparing options. As of November 2026, the sensible approach is to keep Google Ads as the main demand channel and test ChatGPT ads with a small, controlled budget.
Key differences
- Matching: keywords and negative keywords on Google; no keywords on ChatGPT, where advertisers write free-text context hints at ad group level.
- Intent: Google captures existing demand, while ChatGPT reaches people in the middle of a decision.
- Format: many formats on Google; a single text-and-image card on ChatGPT, with no video support.
- Reach: ChatGPT ads are shown only to adult users on the Free and Go plans.
- Measurement: ChatGPT uses the OpenAI Pixel and the Conversions API; the tools are newer and less mature.
- Budget: both run on auctions; the minimum daily budget for USD accounts on ChatGPT is 25 USD, and the campaign objective and billing model cannot be changed later.
Using both channels
We do not recommend a fixed split. Protect profitable Google Ads campaigns, define a test budget for ChatGPT, agree on success metrics in advance, tag both channels with UTMs and scale based on data. Racoun manages both channels as an independent agency through its ChatGPT ads management service.
